Working with Altr.

Altr. is a talent strategy and recruitment consultancy based in New Zealand. We work with businesses of every size, from start-up founders making their first hires to large corporates with a dedicated talent team.

We help you ALTR the way you hire, changing the way you find, assess and attract people. There is no single way to hire that works for every business. Someone else’s hiring playbook is not automatically right for yours, and your hiring should uphold the standards and values your business already has.

Anyone who is hiring. That includes founders and small business owners who do not have a hiring framework yet, growing businesses where hiring has got messy, and HR and talent teams in larger organisations who want an outside perspective or extra capacity.

No. We are based in New Zealand and work with businesses across New Zealand and Australia, in person where it helps and remotely everywhere else.

A complimentary first conversation about what is happening in your hiring: where the pressure or friction sits, and where it is worth looking more closely. You do not need a finished brief or to know which service you need.

If there is something we can help with, we will tell you. If there is not, we will tell you that too.

Every project is scoped to what you actually need. We work on a project basis and charge for the time spent doing the work. No forced packages and no unnecessary extras. The Hiring Diagnosis is free.

Not in the traditional sense. We can recruit for you, but we start with the problem first. Sometimes that is the role, sometimes it is the process, sometimes it is the way you are reaching people. We recruit when that is the right answer, and help with what sits underneath when it is not.

Maybe nothing. You probably know more about your business than we ever will. We are not here to tell you how hiring should work. We are here to help you look at how it actually works.

Where are you losing people? Where are decisions getting stuck? Are you looking for the right capabilities? Is the market you are hiring from actually there? Is technology helping, or has it just been layered onto an existing process?

Sometimes the answer is a redesign. Sometimes it is capability. Sometimes it is technology. Sometimes it is simply getting much clearer about who you are looking for. And sometimes, you do not need to change very much at all.

That is why Altr. starts with the problem, not the product.

Yes. Most organisations now use AI somewhere in hiring, but far fewer are getting real value from it. We help you work out where AI genuinely saves time, where it is adding noise, and where human judgement still needs to lead.

AI can make hiring faster. The question is whether we are accelerating the right process.

Experienced, senior talent leadership on a part-time basis. It suits businesses that need strategy and momentum in their hiring without adding a permanent head-of-talent role.

Hiring questions

Two-thirds of recruiters say it has become harder to find qualified talent. Applications are easier than ever to send, many are written with AI, and the skills employers need are changing quickly.

Your talent shortage might be a talent recognition problem, not a supply problem. More job ads rarely fix it. What usually helps is a sharper definition of the role, a consistent way of assessing people, and a clearer reason for the people you want to pay attention.

Start before the job ad. Before you post anything, get clear on:

  • the work that actually needs doing, and the skills that matter most
  • what you can offer, and why someone would want to join you
  • how you will assess every candidate the same way
  • how you will welcome and support them in their first weeks

In New Zealand you will also need a written employment agreement in place. If you would like a hand, that is exactly what the Hiring Diagnosis is for.

Some common signs:

  • hiring takes longer than anyone has time for
  • you get lots of applications but few good ones
  • different managers assess people in completely different ways
  • the same roles keep being hard to fill
  • you have added tools, but the workload has not got lighter

If a few of those sound familiar, it is usually worth looking at the process before hiring more people or buying more tech.
